I wasn't sure about this place when I first arrived, but it is proving to be quite fascinating. I almost don't mind losing some of my abilities [Or, rather, the intensity of them.] in order to meet those I never thought I would [More like: "could meet".].

If Luceti really is located in another dimension, it makes me wonder how many other dimensions there might be. Of course visiting them and keeping a tally would probably be a nightmare, but it is interesting to think about.

It's not, but we were still colonized by Earth.

[So Gregor was right, then. It's still weird to think about people from being 'other dimensions' in the way that it's worked.]

So the people on Earth came to your world? How far is it from Earth?

It's not really the absolute distance that matters. There was a wormhole that connected Barrayar to Earth space, and that's what people used to get there.

Then our history got a little complicated, because the wormhole collapsed. Eventually -- try seven hundred years later of eventually -- another one was found in Barrayaran space, and we had to relearn space travel and all that sort of thing.

I've heard theories about that being a possibility, though it has never been tested during my time.

[Her eyes widen. So not only is he from the future, but he is from, at least, seven hundred years in the future.]

It's...rather amazing we are able to meet.

There must be some literature pertaining to their origin. Maybe not what they do now, but what they did in the past.

Must there be? I don't think making us into...mutants necessarily requires a book.

I find it hard to believe that no one would have wanted to record their progress.

Some people would rather spend time doing than monitoring what they could be doing.

Fair point. [She's one of those "doing people" anyway.] But I'm definitely taking time to write my experiences down.

It makes it a lot easier down the line if you're ever asked to account for your actions.

Why would you have to account for your actions?

Because generally no one likes an Ensign who runs off and does his own thing.

[Ah, well, this is a little awkward, what with Gregor here and it generally not being a good idea to let people know who he is.]

Not literal protection of the Emperor, more a 'serving at his bidding, or the bidding of his military advisors'.

Someone in my rank wouldn't have...any actual interaction with him.

[There, Ivan thought that was misleading enough while still being entirely accurate. (Less likely to be caught up that way.) He would, after all, likely not know Gregor at all if not for the fact that he's Ivan's cousin and Ivan is in the unfortunate position of being three people -- counting Gregor -- away from having his cousin's job. Which...no thanks.]
