Not literal protection of the Emperor, more a 'serving at his bidding, or the bidding of his military advisors'.
Someone in my rank wouldn't have...any actual interaction with him.

He would, after all, likely not know Gregor at all if not for the fact that he's Ivan's cousin and Ivan is in the unfortunate position of being three people -- counting Gregor -- away from having his cousin's job.
